Boris Johnson will hold talks with the head of the EU Commission, a day after she began legal action on her plan to potentially nullify the Brexit deal.
Ursula von der Leyen and the prime minister are due to speak on Saturday afternoon.
A spokesman for Number 10 said it is to “take stock of the negotiations and discuss the next steps.”
Brussels confirmed the news, adding that the conversation will take place via video call.
While the two leaders will likely focus on trade talks to reach an agreement before the transition period ends in late 2020, Ms Von der Leyen’s action yesterday will inevitably count.
She accused Johnson of violating the “good faith” part of the retirement agreement, by devising a plan to nullify it in case the trade talks were unsuccessful.
One minister admitted that the move would violate international law.
Ahead of Johnson and von der Leyen’s call, the two main UK and EU trade negotiators, Lord David Frost and Michel Barnier, will meet today.
