The news comes after it emerged that the UK proposed legislation to void parts of the Withdrawal Agreement.
A spokesperson for the commission said: “The EU requests clarification from the UK on the full and timely implementation of the Withdrawal Agreement.”
The president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said that the measure to amend the Withdrawal Agreement signed last year “would violate international law and undermine trust” between the two parties.
Within minutes of the publication of the bill, Ms Von der Leyen said: “Very concerned by announcements from the British government of their intentions to violate the Withdrawal Agreement.
“This would violate international law and undermine trust.
“Pacta sunt servanda equates to the foundation of prosperous future relationships.”
“I made it very clear to him that the Withdrawal Agreement is not open to renegotiation.
“The Joint Committee is there to ensure the proper and timely implementation of the Withdrawal Agreement, not to renegotiate it. I have to reiterate this again. “
He added that Downing Street was “fully aware of what disrespect for the ratified treaties signed could mean for the future.”
“It’s a matter of principles. Of course, it has direct implications for conversations about our future. “
He asked the government to “develop and respond to our strong concerns about the bill.”
The President of the European Council, Charles Michel, said: “The withdrawal agreement was concluded and ratified by both parties, it must be applied in its entirety.
“Breaking international law is not acceptable and does not create the trust we need to build our future relationship.”
