Paul Lines, President of Lowestoft Fish Market Alliancehe told Express.co.uk that Britain could dominate the European fish market by supplying fish caught in British waters. He added that the UK government must prioritize rebuilding the national fishing industry and that thousands of jobs will need to be created in the industry for Brexit to be seen as a success.

Mr. Lines said, “You want the raw material to be cut and sold, and if we are smart, we can make a lot of money.”

“We could supply half the fish that Europe needs.

“Instead of your own boats catching you, we could be your catchers and suppliers, that’s our market.

“The fishermen are the ones who will lose out, the processors will not, since this raw material will come from anywhere.

“The Dutch, French and Belgian fishing industries have had 40 years of growth thanks to the injection of subsidies and opportunities.”

He continued: “We have had 40 years of disappearance, Brexit has to turn the tables on that disappearance.

“We have to rebuild the industry and create 12,000 fishing jobs in Britain.

“It’s as simple as that and if it doesn’t happen for us, Brexit will have been a complete failure.”

“I have seen the quotas fall to the point where we have one boat left.

“We fight to make a living from what we have left.”

He added: “We gave it all away to be part of Europe, now we want it back.

“We want to see their ships wrecked, we want their new modern fleet to disappear because we want that.

“As a country we have to have that, if we are going to survive on our own, we have to have everything we can contribute to make money.”
