Brentford began life at their new Brentford Community Stadium with a penalty shootout victory over Wycombe 10-man in the first round of the Carabao Cup.

After a 1-1 draw, Scott Kashket’s Luke Daniels save proved vital before Marcus Forss dispatched the Bees.

Ethan Pinnock had headed off a free kick to give Brentford the lead.

Wycombe played most of the second half with 10 men after Dominic Gape was sent off, but Daryl Horgan crashed from 10 yards to send the game to penalties.

The tie was largely due to the opportunism of Kashket, who took advantage of a mistake by Pinnock to groom Horgan, who joined the Chairboys from Hibernian on Wednesday.

And the 10 men almost won it in the end when Daniels had to flip the post with an effort from Fred Onyedinma.

Brentford, who lost to Fulham in the final of the championship play-offs last month, appeared to be heading into the second round after Gape was shown a direct red card for a tackle on Jan Zamburek.

But they couldn’t increase their lead as Ryan Allsop saved Ivan Toney’s summer signing snapshot, while a shot from Sergi Canos hit the outside of the post.

Wycombe’s Nick Freeman and Bees midfielder Mathias Jensen were dazzled during the penalty shoot-out, but Daniels’ low save to their right to deny Kashket proved the difference.
