FRANCE PREPARES FISHERMEN FOR THE WORST BREXIT

French fishermen will be compensated or taught new skills if their livelihoods are threatened as a result of a no-deal Brexit.

Ships have rammed British vessels in the past and their crews have launched projectiles when they felt rivals invaded their waters, most recently during the so-called war of the scallops of 2018.

Many think that skirmishes could flare up again, particularly if no trade deal is reached between Britain and the European Union, as existing transitional rules granting EU ships access to British waters expire.

“I am very interested in avoiding incidents at sea and the exasperation, perhaps even anger, being expressed,” said Minister of the Seas Annick Girardin.

“I am the daughter of a fisherman, I know how this type of confrontation can be and the consequences it can have. I will try to prevent them. “

The minister said the fishermen would receive financial help and even support to learn new skills and change jobs, regardless of an agreement being reached.
