Manchester City will take a two-goal lead in the Champions League round of 16 second leg against Borussia Monchengladbach after a dominant victory in the first leg tonight.
Due to Covid-19 restrictions in Germany, this match will be played in Budapest, Hungary, but will still count as Monchengladbach’s home match, meaning any City goals will count as away goals. City won their group with relative ease, while Gladbach advanced in a difficult group alongside Real Madrid, Inter Milan and Shakhtar Donetsk.
Pep Guardiola has brought a strong 23-man squad to Hungary, with Kevin De Bruyne, Sergio Agüero and Ilkay Gundogan in good shape after recent concerns. Guardiola made five changes, remembering Aymeric Laporte, Gabriel Jesus and Phil Foden. Agüero and De Bruyne were on the bench.
City dominated early on and took a well-earned lead when Bernardo Silva headed a perfect cross from Joao Cancelo to the back post. The two combined again after the break on a nearly identical play, with Bernardo this time crossing the goal for Gabriel Jesus to get home and give City two crucial goals on the road.

Dortmund reaction
Monchengladbach captain Lars Stindl tells DAZN they deserved to lose.
He said:
“It’s a bit of everything. Of course, Manchester City are an exceptional team that we passionately defended against.
“Off the ball we did well and in possession we weren’t brave enough, we made too many basic mistakes and our only half chances came right at the end.
“We ran a lot, as we knew we would have to, but we have to admit that we deserved to lose. We didn’t make the right decisions when the chances of breaking out presented themselves. At the same time, creating chances against Manchester City is not as easy as it sounds.
“We have to unite and come back in three weeks.”

Guardiola: We still have to improve
Pep Guardiola, speaking to BT Sport, still wants more from his team, referring to the Gabriel Jesús opportunity more than once.
He said:
“In general it was good, we controlled the game apart from an action at the end. Unfortunately today we were not clinical in front, when we were 1 against 1 and that is something we have to improve in this competition.”
About Bernardo:
“He’s so smart, we need offensive midfielders to attack the area and he did.”
In Cancelo:
“He has to improve sometimes and know better so as not to take risks, but he is very intelligent and gives us something special to make us play. Very happy for his two assists in the last third.”
Could you have hidden the tie?
“The first leg is always more difficult but in this competition we don’t have many chances and from the start we have to be more clinical. One against one or against the defenders we couldn’t even dribble. In this competition you have to be perfect to pass.”
Are you a favorite of the Champions League?
“When I see Bayern I wouldn’t think about it. I repeat, my target is West Ham. For a long time we think about every match we try to win from Cheltenham to Old Trafford. The next challenge is West Ham at 12.30. People say that we have to accept it but [we are] the team that only reached the semifinals once in ten years. If they say you can win it, no problem. “

Bernardo: Cancelo knew where he would be
Bernardo Silva says his personal connection with Joao Cancelo was key to both City goals tonight.
He told BT Sport:
“It was a good match for us, a good victory, very important, we know how difficult this competition can be. You make a mistake and you are out. So we try to play simple, without making mistakes, control possession as we always do and we created chances and scored goals. It was a very good game for us, but it’s not over yet. It’s a good victory. “
“I try to practice [headers] a lot, especially now with Ruben we do competitions to see who scores the most goals from the head. I think tonight I was lucky that Joao gave me a great ball. Happy to score and help the team.
“He is an incredible player. I played with him for seven years at Benfica, we are of the same generation, I know him well. So the connection is good, he knows my time, I know how good he is in these types of situations.” balls. It was a very good goal. His passing qualities and overall he’s been having a great season and I’m happy for him. “
“It has been my fourth season here at Man City, a great team, a great staff, a pleasure to play with these guys. So far this season has been a good season for us, but we have to keep going because we are halfway there.
“It’s always been like this for the last four seasons. We have a map, a way to play. Players get injured, some players can’t play for many reasons. The style of play continues and it’s a good sign.”

Looking ahead to the next game
The last 20 minutes could give a good idea of who will start against West Ham.
With a two-goal cushion, Guardiola can afford to bring in substitutes, but he can choose to let those already there finish the game and then turn to Stones, De Bruyne and others for league play.

Guardiola’s dilemma
City can close out this tie tonight if they do so in this second half, but one wonders how Guardiola will want to cope with City’s past disappointments in Europe.
They are currently in control of the tie – do they risk losing it to push for an easier comeback match?

Jesus’ effort denied
Gabriel Jesús has finished after a bad back pass, with all the time in the world, but he takes too long and allows the challenge to enter and prevent him from shooting far. Very poor.

Not much to report
It’s been a more even start to the second half, Gladbach trying to create a bit more than the first half, and City just making sure they are solid at the back and in possession.
