Kirklees MP reaction

Huddersfield MP Barry Sheerman said:

We don’t want to go back to where we were in May.

We have to obey these restrictions. We will head to a national emergency if we don’t.

He commended the work of Kirklees Council management and staff for addressing Covid-19 in recent months.

But he said that now was the time for the government to organize itself for what it described as “the possibility of a perfect storm in all areas of the local authorities.”

Added:

We have to keep fighting to lower the numbers.

Colne Valley MP Jason McCartney pledged to push for more support for the local economy and for mental health and well-being as the fight against the virus continues.

He said:

I am pleased that we are not at the upper level alert level and welcome what will hopefully be a simpler guide as we all strive to address the growing number of Covid cases and hospitalizations in Kirklees.

Thank you to everyone who has worked and volunteered in our community during this crisis.

Batley and Spen MP Tracy Brabin said it was “disappointing” that the Kirklees communities had to accept the new restrictions.

She added:

However, level 2 means that many businesses can remain open and people can still participate in many parts of their daily life, which is so important for mental health and well-being.

The important thing above all is that these restrictions work and that the spread of the coronavirus is slowing down.

The sacrifices we are making must lead to something, and if the cases go down, the restrictions should also go down.

Dewsbury MP Mark Eastwood said the government’s announcement was close to existing measures already in place in Kirklees.

Level 2 restrictions are clear and simple: no more than six people can meet outdoors and there can be no domestic mixing indoors. The same exemptions apply as before.

I am very pleased that pubs and restaurants are still licensed. However, it is crucial that we stick to the rules – wash our hands, cover our faces, and maintain space through social distancing to ensure we don’t get into Level 3 restrictions.
