The prime minister received a furious backlash after he made the remarks during a zoom meeting with parliamentarians from the north. He said “the return has been a disaster north of the border” and described it as “Tony Blair’s biggest mistake.”

Nicola Sturgeon, leader of the SNP, insisted that the comments had reinforced the argument that Scotland secede from the United Kingdom.

And SNP Westminster leader Ian Blackford added that Johnson had been “caught red-handed” and insisted the “only way” to defend Scotland is through independence.

But an exclusive Express.co.uk poll found that 93 percent (12,515 people) agreed with Johnson.

Only seven percent (900 people) said they did not believe the return was a mistake and 75 people said they did not know.

A total of 13,490 readers participated in the online survey that took place between 8.30 am and 9.30 pm on Wednesday, November 18.

One reader said: “The return was never intended to be a launching pad for independence, it has been hijacked by the SNP, but this was always the risk.”

Another commented: “I’ve been saying it for years. It shows how foolish Blair was and is. He clearly had no foresight!

“An idiot could have seen this coming. An idiot did not do it sadly, and it turned out that he was ruling the country at the time – with another idiot!”

A third person added: “The return is a disaster! Boris is right and I am proud to be Scottish.”

And another reader also said: “Decentralization has turned out to be undesirable insofar as the dominance of nationalist parties like the SNP has made it their main ambition, above all else, to separate Scotland from the UK.”

Conservative advocate John Redwood defended the prime minister, insisting that the SNP only wants to use delegated administration to “destroy the union” and claimed that Scottish nationalists see Holyrood as a “battering ram against the UK”.

A spokesperson for Mr Johnson said: “The Prime Minister has always fully supported return. This Government continues to put the Union at the center of everything we do.

“The Prime Minister has made it clear that he believes the four corners of the UK are stronger together and will be the voice of the majority of Scots who voted decisively to hold the UK together.

“He will always oppose those who try to separate the UK.

“The prime minister believes that we had what was a once-in-a-generation referendum and that the result should be respected. He firmly rejects the SNP’s call to divide the UK.”
