ANTHONY BARRY has agreed to stay in Chelsea with Thomas Tuchel after turning down the manager position at League One Fleetwood Town.

The 34-year-old joined the Blues as a first team coach with Frank Lampard in August 2020 after three years as an assistant at Wigan.

Barry, who met Lampard during their time together on the English Pro License course, has made a huge impact at Stamford Bridge, with a specific focus on set pieces and defensive form.

Speaking earlier this month, Lampard said: “He has been really positive for the dynamics of the group, and in every way. He has certainly helped on set pieces, but he is very diligent, he pays a lot of attention to ourselves and opposition in every part of the game, from what we do in the office, to studying the opposition and working on the training ground. “

When Lampard was fired on Monday, Barry took the training session, which had moved from morning to afternoon, along with Joe Edwards.

However, his future at the club has remained in doubt ever since, as Fleetwood had offered him the position of their coach, which has been vacant since Joey Barton was fired in early January.

Liverpool-born Barry made 58 appearances with Fleetwood as a player and has ambition to move on to management, so he faced a difficult dilemma.

However, he has now vowed to stay with Chelsea, along with Edwards and goalkeeping coach Henrique Hiilario, because the opportunity to work with new coach Thomas Tuchel was too good to turn down.

On the other hand, the Hungarian Zsolt Low, who played with Tuchel in Mainz and was in his team at PSG, enters as an assistant, as does Lieutenant Arno Michels.

Benjamin Weber enters a data analysis role. Edwards remains, but two of Lampard’s other assistants, Jody Morris and Chris Jones, have left along with the former England midfielder.
