Terrifying body camera footage shows the moment a teenage driver dragged a police community support officer 30 feet while yelling for help.
West Midlands Police PCSO Kieron Poole said he had feared for his life as he could easily have been dragged under the tires during the January 25 incident last year.
The officer was confronting 18-year-old Muhammad Nadeem about whether he was smoking cannabis in the car when the teenager began driving, dragging the officer along with him by the arm.
Nadeem ignored the officer’s shouts of “Stop! Stop the vehicle now! Help!” while trying to run away.
Mr. Poole finally managed to free himself by removing the keys from the ignition.
The suspect tried to flee on foot and the officer chased him into a dead end, but charged him and hit him on the head with a plastic bottle as he fled.
Nadeem was later detained by a team of officers after heading towards Smethwick High Street in Sandwell.
Describing the incident, Poole said it had “happened very quickly.”
He said the driver “seemed friendly enough at first,” but events quickly escalated after he was confronted about cannabis.
“Before I knew it, my arm was attached to the car and I was being propelled, hanging off the side, through a couple of branches, about 20-30 feet before I knew what was happening,” Poole said.
“I yelled ‘Stop! Stop!’ But he wasn’t paying attention. He knew he had to take the key out of the ignition. If he hadn’t, it might have gone under his tires and he might not be here today.
“I decided I would not let him sit down and get away with it. I was always brought up to respect the police, and at the time, I didn’t want him to get away with it.”
The officer described how “instinctively” he had continued to chase Nadeem even after the terrifying experience and had been hit “quite hard” on the side of the head with the bottle.
“He started to calmly walk down the street, but I didn’t want to get too close at the time thinking he might have a gun, he already hit me on the head, he’s clearly going to resist, so my best course of action was to wait for the units. from the local neighborhood, ”he said.
The officer was not seriously injured, although he did suffer a contusion to his arm.
A hammer and ax were later found in Nadeem’s car and he also had a small amount of cannabis on it.
Nadeem, now 19, of Smethwick said he was “shocked” when the footage was shown to him and admitted “it doesn’t look good.”
He has admitted that the assault resulted in actual bodily harm, dangerous driving and possession of an offensive weapon, and will be sentenced at a later date.
