A man has been named who tragically died in the stabbings in Birmingham city center.
Jacob Billington was only 23 when he was stabbed on Irving Street when he was with friends from Liverpool school visiting one of his group studying in Birmingham.
Another friend, also 23, was seriously injured and remains in hospital in critical condition.
Jacob’s family has spoken of his loss: “Jacob was the light of our life and we have been devastated by his loss.
“He was a fun, caring and wonderful person who was loved by everyone he knew. He lit up every room with his boundless energy and witty humor, and everyone who has known him for years will feel the loss of such a special person. Come.
“We ask that our privacy be respected during this difficult time.”
Another man, 30, stabbed on Livery Street and a 22-year-old woman, attacked on Hurst Street, remain seriously injured in hospital. Four others, three men and a woman, were also injured.
Detectives worked around the clock securing CCTV footage and speaking to witnesses, and this morning a 27-year-old Birmingham man was arrested at his home in Selly Oak. He remains in custody on suspicion of murder and seven counts of attempted murder.
Three other people, two men and a woman, were arrested at the same address on suspicion of helping a criminal.
Chief Superintendent Steve Graham said: “Our thoughts and condolences go out to Jacob’s family and friends after receiving such shocking news, particularly for those who shared their evening with him. It is absolutely shocking that a gathering of friends ends in such a way brutal.
“Similarly, the families of the other victims were devastated by the events of Sunday morning and we are working hard to find out what led to the seemingly random attacks. We have no suggestion that the motive is racial, homophobic or related to gangs “. “
In a tweet, the West Midlands Police wrote: “It is truly disappointing to see racist and offensive messages on our page in the wake of a tragedy that has claimed the life of a young man and left others seriously injured.
“We ask people to consider the feelings of the families of the victims when they send messages. They are dealing with a ordeal and will not be helped by speculation, false rumors and hate messages.”
