Frank Lampard praised Billy Gilmour’s “outstanding” return when the Scottish teenager impressed in Chelsea’s 1-1 draw in the Champions League with Krasnodar.
Gilmour has recovered from a four-month suspension due to injury after knee surgery, and he seemed confident and confident in the Blues’ midfield.
The 19-year-old enjoyed a stellar campaign last year but now faces even greater competition for opportunities at Stamford Bridge given Chelsea’s £ 220 million summer recruitment drive.
However, Blues boss Lampard praised Gilmour’s performance in the dead rubber Champions League match, inclining the former Rangers youth product to push hard for regular football now.
“I thought Billy was outstanding on his return, I felt very comfortable with his return, he has trained very well, did his rehab and deserved his chance tonight,” Lampard said.
“So I hope to see more of the same from Billy as he gets stronger now that he’s gotten over his injury.”
Jorginho’s penalty saved a second-row Chelsea from the tie, after Remy Cabella had put the visitors ahead.
The Blues had already won Group E, leaving Tuesday’s West London affair as an afterthought, though not for the Chelsea stars struggling to prove their pick points.
Academy graduate Tino Anjorin enjoyed a fruitful full debut, with the 19-year-old winger looking comfortable on the ball and working hard.
Lampard praised his work ethic and admitted that he would spend the next several weeks with the first team, while Hakim Ziyech and Callum Hudson-Odoi recover from hamstring problems.
“Tino showed a real ability to get straight into the level, in terms of his skills on the ball, which I think he showed today,” Lampard said. “His physical attributes for protecting the ball and running shone well.
“He’s a work in progress, especially after recent injury concerns, but he’s a player that the more he trains with us, the better he gets.”
“With the injuries we have, in the short term he will be spending more time with us. It was a good debut and he got into the game as he progressed.”
Wingers Ziyech and Hudson-Odoi have suffered hamstring problems, but Lampard hopes both have avoided injury in the long run.
“We think they are both going to be close to two weeks. They both had scans yesterday,” Lampard said. “So it should be about two weeks.
“With Hakim that’s positive, whereas with Callum we didn’t know what to expect. But it’s generally good news for both of us.”
