Barcelona conceded two embarrassing goals as they suffered a surprising 2-1 loss to Cádiz in La Liga on Saturday, prompting head coach Ronald Koeman to criticize the attitude of his players.
The Catalans were left behind in the eighth minute when Óscar Mingueza headed the ball towards his own goal and although goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen put a hand on the ball, Cadiz striker Álvaro Giménez helped to overcome the line.
Barça drew with a lucky goal at 57 when Pedro Alcalá deflected a Jordi Alba cross into the net, disconcerting their impressive goalkeeper Jeremias Ledesma, who had kept Barça at bay.
Cádiz regained the lead six minutes later, however, thanks to a dire error by Ter Stegen, who kicked the ball against Álvaro Negredo and the veteran striker followed the rebound to dribble into the unguarded net.
Barça’s fourth defeat of the season has placed them seventh in the standings with 14 points after 10 games and Koeman’s men have failed to win their last four away games.
Koeman said: “It’s unbelievable that we lost by a goal like that, it’s a mistake that you don’t expect this team to make. It shows that we weren’t concentrating.
“The attitude was not good tonight. I’m very disappointed.”
Cádiz, who recorded their first home win since returning to the top flight, was above them in fifth place with 18 points. The Andalusians also beat Real Madrid, the champions, 1-0 away from home earlier in the campaign.
Lionel Messi had a frustrating night despite the Barça captain rested for the Champions League win at Ferencvaros midweek and was repeatedly thwarted by Ledesma in the Cádiz goal.
Ledesma also kept out a stinging shot from Miralem Pjanic in the end and a close-range shot from Antoine Griezmann. Cádiz should have put the game out of Barça’s reach when Bobby Adekanye ran towards the goal without rival, but could not beat Ter Stegen.
