A new petition calls for Zara Holland of Love Island to be jailed after she violated strict coronavirus rules in Barbados.

The Change.org page calls for the 25-year-old and his boyfriend Elliott Love to be punished after they were detained at the airport while trying to flee the island nation after their positive test result.

Signed by more than 300 people, it says: “They acted with a level of selfishness and right that is not believed.

“They undermined the enormous amount of work that the Barbadian government and people had done to suppress community broadcasting and not only risked the livelihoods of Baja Californians, they also risked their lives.”

And he went on to ask that Zara and Elliott face the strictest sentences: “If a single person dies as a result of their selfish and cowardly actions, then they should be charged with murder.”

“Either way, we strongly believe that they should receive a prison sentence, whether in Barbados or the UK, for deliberately endangering the lives of hundreds of thousands of people.”

For its part, Zara has apologized for failing to abide by the strict coronavirus rules, calling its actions “massive confusion.”

Through a representative of her family, she issued a statement to Barbados Today, calling the events a “misunderstanding”, after she was released from a military base converted into a Covid quarantine center on the island.

She said: “First of all, I wish to apologize to the entire country of Barbados for what has been a massive confusion and misunderstanding during my most recent stay.”

The reality star said she was “working closely” with officials after she was detained at the airport on December 29.

Former Miss Zara, who tested negative for the virus, was released from the quarantine center when she received a second negative test result.

Elliott remained at the center, where he must remain for at least six days and until he can provide two negative results, under Barbados rules.

The two are alleged to have cut off their coronavirus-positive red armbands and fled their £ 300-a-night Sugar Bay hotel after Elliott’s test result. They were stopped by officials at the airport before boarding their flight home.

Those who violate Covid laws on the island face a £ 18,000 fine or a possible jail sentence.
