This was the second death reported in the Ballykeel area of the city on Wednesday.
A murder investigation was launched after the body of a man was discovered in an apartment on Crebilly Drive.
The Rev. Martin McNeely of Ballykeel Presbyterian Church said the boy’s death was “tragic.”
“People find it very difficult to find the vocabulary to describe the depth of pain,” he said.
“This is a community that has experienced a tragic murder this morning and now the tragic death of a beloved 12-year-old girl tonight.”
