‘Bale is not an idiot, he chose Spurs over MLS for a reason’: Redknapp hopes the Welshman is the star

The former Tottenham midfielder believes the return of a familiar face to North London has given José Mourinho the best attack in the Premier League

Gareth Bale “is not an idiot” and rejoined Tottenham to move to China or MLS because he believes he has “something left in his tank,” says Jamie Redknapp.

The Welsh international has retraced his steps to north London from Real Madrid. Despite racking up an enviable number of trophies in Spain, including two La Liga titles and four Champions League crowns, the 32-year-old became the scapegoat for many at the Santiago Bernabéu.

A move had been on the cards for some time before finally landing a season-long loan in the summer of 2020.

Bale could make his second Spurs debut when they attend a derby date with West Ham on Sunday, having overcome a bothersome knee injury.

Redknapp is among those hoping for a global superstar to shine again on the Premier League stage, and says there is every reason to believe an old spark can be rekindled.

The former Spurs midfielder said Paddy power: “There is a really simple reason why I think Bale will work at Tottenham: he is not an idiot.

“I don’t think he’s the type of person who would offer himself unless he thought it would work. He could have gone anywhere, to the United States, to China, to Manchester United, wherever he wanted, but he chose Tottenham because he knows there is something left in his tank.

“It’s also great news for the fans, and if you can regain the form you had before going to Real Madrid, then honestly, anything is possible. Because he’s an incredible talent, there’s nothing he can’t do. “

Bale is poised to be part of a star-studded attack on Tottenham alongside Harry Kane and Heung-min Son, and Redknapp believes Mourinho now has the most fearsome front row in the English top flight.

He added: “If those three can get along, then that’s the best front line in the country. We all think of [Mohamed] Incorrect, [Roberto] Firmino and [Sadio] Mane, but all three of the Spurs have goals.

“They could be incredible. I really can’t wait to see how those three forwards fit together, it has the potential to be unreal. “
