A drone has dropped packages of suspected cannabis over an Israeli city after activists promised they would pull off the stunt.

Police said they arrested two men who allegedly blew up the device over Tel Aviv’s Rabin Square, a site used for street protests and political rallies.

It came after the group Green Drone, which seeks to legalize marijuana in Israel, said on its Telegram web messaging channel: “The time has come.”

The group added, “Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s the Green Drone that sends you free cannabis from the skies.”

Police said they suspected the bags were filled with “a dangerous drug” and that officers managed to retrieve dozens of packages.

The Maariv news website, which posted photos of the drone dropping the packages, said passers-by took some of them before police arrived.

The images showed people walking through traffic to pick up packages that had fallen on a road.

Currently, the medical use of cannabis is allowed in Israel, while recreational use is illegal, but largely decriminalized.

In May, Israel approved medical cannabis exports, paving the way for foreign sales that the government hopes to bring in hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue.
