Back to school: England’s calendar for the new year | Education

When will most children be allowed to return to schools in England?
That depends on the age of the children, where they live and if next summer they will take national exams like the GCSEs. The government expects schools and universities to have fully reopened as of January 18.

Are schools closed in England?
No. In all cases, schools will remain open to allow staff to conduct distance learning and to help secondary schools prepare for mass virus testing of staff and students. There is a national exemption for children classified as vulnerable by the government and for those with a parent who is a key worker; They will be able to attend school in person regardless of the situation of other students.

Which children from England will be able to go back to school next week?
Only vulnerable children and those of key workers will be able to attend high schools and colleges during the first week of the term, starting January 4. For the majority of primary school-age students, schools will be primarily open, except those in one of 50 local authorities called “contingency framework areas” with high rates of Covid transmission. These schools will be closed for most students until January 18.

List

What is the high school reopening schedule?
As of January 4, students who take national exams (mainly in years 11 and 13) will receive distance training. Other age groups can be taught remotely, according to DfE’s guidance to principals, which says schools “should provide some distance learning whenever possible.” Starting on January 11, those taking the exams (mainly Years 11 and 13) will return for face-to-face teaching, while the other age groups will be taught remotely. Schools must screen students for Covid infection at least twice during this period, which means that all age groups will be asked to attend testing.

So everything went back to normal on January 18?
Maybe. The government said it would have reviewed the areas of the contingency framework by then, so secondary and elementary schools in the affected areas could remain closed to in-person teaching for the remainder of January.

What about students with exams at the beginning of the trimester?
Students with external BTec assessments or similar exams scheduled for the first two weeks will be able to attend in person if necessary. High schools are likely to reschedule any mock exams (for national exams), such as GCSE and A-levels, for January 11 or later.

And the school nurseries?
The nurseries will be open, although those assigned to a primary school in any of the contingency areas will also have the option of closing.
