Avonmouth explosion: Wessex Water emission statement

The heads of Wessex Water, who own a site where a major explosion took place today, have confirmed that people’s supply will not be affected.

Police have declared a major incident following the explosion in a chemical tank.

Several people have been injured after the explosion at 11:20 am this morning (Thursday, December 3) at the water recycling center.

Residents have been urged to avoid the area and there is a police cordon on Kings Weston Lane.

A Wessex Water spokesperson has assured people that today’s incident will not affect their water supply.

That is because the site treats wastewater and does not participate in supplying the city with water.

However, the spokesman said that because the police are leading the incident, the company cannot issue a more detailed comment at this time.

Chief Inspector Mark Runacres said: “Officers remain at the scene and are likely to be for some time as we work together with other agencies to address this important incident.

“A cordon has been established and we advise members of the public to avoid the area at this time when possible to allow emergency services to do their job.
