Avonmouth explosion: four dead and one injured

Four people were killed and a worker was injured after a large explosion in Avonmouth today.

Police confirmed that the workers were on top of a chemical tank at a Wessex Water treatment center when the blast erupted.

During a press conference this afternoon, Chief Inspector Mark Runacres said: “Emergency services were called at approximately 11.20am to receive reports of a large explosion involving one of the chemical tanks at the site in front of Kings Weston Lane “.

“The fire service led the rescue operation but sadly, despite the best efforts of everyone involved, we can confirm that there have been four deaths.

“This includes three Wessex Water employees and a contractor.

“Specially trained officers have contacted each of the families of these individuals this afternoon and informed them of the sad news.

“This is a tragic incident and our thoughts and condolences are with them.”

Today a major incident was declared and people were urged to avoid the area.

Firefighters, police, paramedics and a Wiltshire air ambulance attended the incident on Kings Weston Lane.
