icolas Pepe has become the latest footballer to suffer racist abuse on social media after being sent off in Arsenal’s 0-0 draw with Leeds on Sunday.
Pepe was shown a red card for head-butting Leeds player Ezgjan Alioski in the second half on Elland Road and was subjected to vile abuse by online trolls.
Former England and Chelsea winger Shaun Wright-Phillips posted a screenshot of some of the abuse against Pepe on Twitter and said: “And Twitter says they are protecting people from racial abuse! When is enough and when will it stop?!? ”.
The abuse directed at Pepe comes three weeks after Tottenham winger Ryan Sessegnon was the target of similar racial slurs online. Sessegnon, who is currently on loan from German club Hoffenheim, posted a screenshot of the messages he received on Instagram.
Other black players, including Crystal Palace’s Wilfried Zaha, Chelsea’s Tammy Abraham, Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford and Mancehster City’s Raheem Sterling, have been attacked in the past.
Last month, Raheem Sterling called on social media companies to “show real leadership and take appropriate action” against online abuse after a study identified more than 3,000 explicitly abusive messages that were sent to gamers. Premier League during Project Reboot last season.
