A woman was shot in the face when a gunman opened fire with a shotgun on a street this afternoon.
Police and paramedics were called to Hathersage Road, Huyton, around 3pm to report that a shotgun had been fired.
Armed officers closed the street when the injured victim, a woman in her 30s, was rushed to hospital for treatment.
According to Merseyside Police, he sustained a facial injury but was not believed to be the intended target.
There are currently road closures and a cordon around the scene as police launch an investigation into the attack.
In a statement, a spokesman for the force said: “We are requesting information following a wounded shooting in Huyton this afternoon, Tuesday 1 September.
“At 3pm, armed officers were called to Hathersage Road to receive reports of a shotgun blast in the street.
“A woman in her 30s was taken to hospital for treatment for a minor facial wound. Initially the victim is not believed to have been the target.
“Officers will remain in the area to conduct forensic, closed-circuit television, house-to-house and witness investigations, and to speak with the local community.
Detective Chief Inspector Matt Smith of our Firearms Investigation Unit said: “We understand and share the disgust and disbelief that members of the community will feel upon learning that such an incident has occurred.

“However, this will have been a horrible experience and we will be talking to her at the first opportunity we get to find out how she is doing.
