Glasgow police arrested and charged a teenager in connection with an alleged racist social media post directed at Alfredo Morelos during Sunday’s game between Celtic and Rangers.

Morelos scored the Rangers’ 1-1 draw with Celtic, after which he was reportedly the target of a racist video.

Scotland’s police said Monday morning that they had started an investigation after receiving several complaints about an offensive post on social media.

On Monday night it was confirmed that a 17-year-old had been arrested and charged.

Rangers and Police Scotland also confirmed that this arrest was related to the Snapchat post directed at Morelos.

Earlier Monday, John Clark Motor Group revealed that they had suspended an employee after allegedly targeting Morelos racist abuse on Snapchat.

The Celtic and Rangers players were united as they opted to stand rather than kneel before the Old Firm clash.

The incident occurred just days after Rangers midfielder Glen Kamara was allegedly racially abused during a Europa League game against Slavia Prague.

UEFA’s investigation into that incident is ongoing.

The Rangers and Celtic players decided to fight racism together rather than kneel before Sunday’s Old Firm derby.

Rangers captain James Tavernier said: “We knelt to send a message, but we think that message is not strong enough.”

“We wanted to send a strong message and it was an easy decision. You saw the situation on Thursday and that will be solved.

“But I feel confident saying that all of our black players have been racially abused this season.

“That comes from the social media platforms and this is a key message for them. Action must be taken, enough is enough.”

In the wake of Morelos’ alleged abuse, Rangers said: “Our captain highlighted the continued attacks on footballers online.

“Now is the time for social media companies to act and root out the faceless cowards who make offensive comments like this.”
