Former English footballer Alex Scott has become the victim of racist remarks following reports of her involvement in A Question of Sport.

Yesterday it was reported that Alex, 35, was selected to replace the 64-year-old presenter Sue Barker, who was fired.

The news appeared to be confirmed by ex-footballer and BBC commentator Gary Lineker on Twitter as he congratulated Alex on his new role.

On Thursday he tweeted: “Congratulations and good luck to @AlexScott for being the new host of Question Of Sport.

“Smart, knowledgeable, and perfectly qualified for the position. Oh … and if you have a problem with Alex getting the job, you may be part of the problem.”

Alex Scott has become the victim of vile racist remarks after reports that she replaced Sue Barker on A Question of Sport.

However, Alex has faced vile racist comments from trolls in response to the news.

These comments include some on Twitter referring to her possible casting as a “check box” exercise, while another person wrote “No experience or good presentation skills. But her color gets the job done.”

Despite the nasty comments, celebrities like Piers Morgan and Andrew “Freddie” Flintoff have advocated for Alex in the role.

Freddie tweeted: “Congratulations @AlexScott In the new job, no matter the idiots, you’ll be brilliant. ”

It was reported that Alex would replace Sue Barker, but this has yet to be confirmed by the BBC.

However, the nasty comments will reportedly affect Alex badly.

A source told The Sun: “The abuse you have received on Twitter and other social media platforms has been disgusting.

“Thousands of people have supported me, but they are the negatives that Alex will remember. She is only human.”

Mirror Online has reached out to a representative for Alex Scott for comment.

Sue and team captains Phil Tufnell and Matt Dawson have spoken out about their departures

When approached by Mirror Online to confirm Alex’s new role in A Question of Sport, the BBC declined to comment and they have yet to confirm any replacement for Sue Barker.

Sue is set to film her final episodes with team captains Phil Tufnell and Matt Dawson later this month.

“I loved my 24 years running A Question of Sport,” Sue told The Mirror, “it has been my dream job.”

“But I understand that the BBC wants to take the program in a new direction and I am sad to say goodbye.”
