Alan Shearer’s brutal verdict in Newcastle as his fellow pundits back down

Alan Shearer has highlighted a lack of ambition at Newcastle as a major factor of discontent in another scathing analysis of the Match of the Day.

United were beaten 2-0 at Manchester City when they suffered another unsuccessful trip following a midweek League Cup disappointment against Brentford.

And while discussing the game in Game of the Day with fellow expert Danny Murphy, he said there was a major reason the loss, while expected, contributed to the feeling of disappointment.

“The fans just want a little bit of ambition. They don’t just want a team that exists,” Shearer said.

“They look at Villa, who has ambition, Everton who has ambition, Southampton who has ambition and you don’t have it with Newcastle.”

For Murphy, who invoked a fierce response from fans when he questioned what more fans wanted than what Bruce was delivering, there was a noticeable change in tone.

“I said a couple weeks ago, I’m not sure what the Newcastle fans want. Now I know, Alan (Shearer) told me enough, the fans told me enough,” Murphy said.

“What they don’t want to see is a lack of creativity, a lack of energy and a lack of fighting. Yes, they have had some injuries, but if you compare them, they are one point ahead of Leeds.

“If you ask all the Leeds fans if they enjoy watching their team, they say yes. Why? Because they see a team that is hungry, desperately trying to play the right way, being brave and bold.

“I think if they got everyone in shape they could certainly be better than they are because right now they seem like a team without confidence and without ideas.”
