“Terrible”, and in that word, Alan Shearer summed up Newcastle United’s performance against Brighton.
The Magpies lost 3-0 up at St James’ Park, and they never looked into the game: two to zero less in seven minutes thanks to Neal Maupay.
Brighton could have finished the game with more than three goals (Aaron Connolly got the third later) and, as Shearer told MOTD 2 viewers, Newcastle ‘got worse’ as the game progressed.
Past and Overcome: United struggled with Brighton’s approach to the game and failed to register a single shot on goal as the visitors hit the wood and forced goalkeeper Karl Darlow to make a decent pair of saves.
United fans were shocked by such a performance, and Shearer also did not hold back in his verdict.
“They were awful,” he told MOTD 2 host Mark Chapman.
“There has been so much positivity flying around Newcastle, and rightly so because of their performance last weekend against West Ham – they had energy, they started the game well, they were a threat going forward, but there was none of that today.
“They started the game in a terrible way, they actually got worse, and now there will be a lot of criticism flying by and for good reason.
“Brighton was a much better team, and in every position Brighton was better.”
United will face Morecambe on Wednesday night in the EFL Cup before a trip to Spurs next Sunday; Head coach Steve Bruce will demand a response from his players.
However, he may have to do it without Allan Saint-Maximin and Jamal Lewis, who left the pitch with injuries in what turned out to be a day to forget at St James’ Park.
