Alan Shearer delivered another scathing assessment of ‘ghastly’ Newcastle while they were working against Fulham.
The Magpies were second best on long stretches against the Cottagers, who sat in the bottom three as they reached St James’ Park. An own goal from Matt Ritchie gave them a well-deserved lead before Callum Wilson’s penalty leveled things out.
But it was a poor performance and Shearer felt family problems undermining Newcastle.
“I thought it was a terrible performance from Newcastle. No energy. Slow and slow in their passing, they didn’t create close enough,” he said on Match of the Day.
“And again, what has happened too many times this season, there is not enough possession. They did not have enough ball.”
Shearer has criticized Mike Ashley this season, arguing that the debate over whether Bruce or Rafa Benitez had performed better was pointless as long as the owner continued to control the club.
But he has always pointed to some of Newcastle’s most disappointing displays.
It could have been worse for United had it not been for the run and Wilson’s penalty. However, expert Jermaine Jenas felt that the Newcastle striker had taken a dive.
He said: “I think Scott Parker is right, he got it right. You can see here, Joachim Andersen’s contact on Callum Wilson is out of the box on his arm.
“To be clear, from this angle, in my opinion, this is a dive. There’s minor contact there on Wilson’s sole, but there’s no need for him to dive like this. I don’t think it’s a fault.
“I’m surprised that Graham Scott gave it, I really am.”
Shearer agreed. “I don’t think it should have been a penalty,” he said.
“That’s a dip. Yeah, there’s a little touch there, but it’s not enough to knock it down. It should have been a foul out of the box because it’s grabbed onto the shirt and I thought it was a dip.”
