Nicolas Pepe’s attacking performance summed up Arsenal’s woes at Everton, according to former England captain Alan Shearer.
The Ivorian scored just his club’s 12th Premier League goal of the season from the penalty spot at Goodison Park, but Shearer lashed out at his efforts from open play as the Gunners fell to an eighth loss of their 14 league games. Premier League this season.
Pepe had scored the Arsenal equalizer after a Rob Holding own goal for the hosts, before Yerry Mina led the game-winner just before half-time.
Arsenal stayed at 15th in the Premier League table after the defeat, and will fall to 16th if Brighton beat Sheffield United, the bottom of the table, on Sunday.
“Twelve goals [in the Premier League] all season and for that, “Shearer said on Match of the Day about a video in which he highlighted Pepe’s lack of movement on the right flank.
“There are no options and when the ball goes astray, look at Pepe, who is not ready to enter, [he’s] jogging, sometimes walking.
“He has to do more, he has to try to reach the end.
“Look at Pepe on the right side, quite happy to sit there.
“It has not bothered him at all trying to break his neck to enter and reach the end and score goals.
“It’s no wonder they’re not creating chances, it’s no wonder they’re not scoring goals when he does that kind of thing.
“It’s not just him, there are few players on that team who don’t give everything for the coach.
“They will never score goals playing like this.”
Gunner chief Mikel Arteta is under increasing pressure from recent poor results, although as he stands there are said to be no plans to fire him.
