Video footage from the event shows a fellow troublemaker warning that the police were armed, but she arrived too late and was shot shortly after 3 p.m. and rushed to hospital where she later died.

Ms. Babbitt, who owned a pool repair and service business with her second husband, traveled to Washington without him.

He only found out that he had been shot when he saw the pictures of her on television.

A police investigation is now underway into the circumstances of Ms Babbitt’s death.

Her brother-in-law, Justin Jackson, told NBC 7 that he had been in contact with the Washington police, but said they did not tell him exactly what caused the shooting.

He said: “Ashli was loyal and extremely passionate about what she believed in. She loved this country and was honored to have served in our Armed Forces. Please keep her family in your thoughts and respect her privacy during this time.”

On her Twitter page, Ms. Babbitt described herself as a veteran and libertarian, adding, “I love my friend, my dog, and most of all, my country.”

She had shared the conspiracy theories promoted by QAnon, a group that falsely believes that the United States government is controlled by a “deep state” clique of anti-Trump Satanist pedophiles.

“Nothing will stop us … you can try and prove it, but the storm is here and descending on DC in less than 24 hours … from dark to light!” He wrote in a tweet Tuesday.
