It may be more than 18 months to wait, but the nation is expected to be treated with an additional day off to mark the Queen’s 70-year reign on the throne.
As part of what is billed as a ‘blockbuster’ celebration for Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022, people will enjoy a four-day weekend across the UK in recognition of the first time that a British monarch reaches the milestone.
The May Bank Holiday weekend will be moved to early June and an additional day will be added to the bank holiday calendar, allowing for four days of events that the government promises will “mix the best of British ceremonial splendor and pageantry with artistic avant-garde and technological screens ”.
Following a tradition dating back to the reign of Queen Victoria, when an official medal was designed to commemorate her 50th anniversary on the throne, a platinum jubilee medal will be awarded to people who work in public service, such as staff of the armed forces and the emergency services.
The celebrations will recognize the impact of the 94-year-old monarch over the course of her historic reign, which has seen 14 prime ministers since she took the throne at just 25 years old in 1952.
Although the exact plans for the Platinum Jubilee are being kept under wraps for now, and the events likely hinge on the success of taming the Covid-19 pandemic, the Queen’s Golden Jubilee in 2002 was celebrated with a concert at the Buckingham Palace, nicknamed “party in the palace”. Performances included Brian May from the rock band Queen playing God Save the Queen on his guitar on the roof of the palace.
Hinting at what else to expect this time around, the Department of Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, which is organizing the celebrations together with the royal house, said that the “spectacular moments” in the capital and other major cities will be they will be complemented with community events. in the UK and Commonwealth. The holiday will last four days beginning Thursday, June 2, 2022, with more details to be released in the coming months.
Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden said: “Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee will be a truly historic moment, and one that deserves a celebration to remember. We can all look forward to a special four-day Jubilee weekend when we present a spectacular show, one of a kind in a generation, blending the best of British ceremonial splendor with state-of-the-art art and technology. It will unite the entire nation and the Commonwealth in a fitting tribute to Her Majesty’s reign. “
A palace spokesperson added: “The Platinum Jubilee provides an opportunity for the Queen to express her appreciation for the support and loyalty Her Majesty has received during her reign. The Queen hopes that as many people as possible will have the opportunity to join in the celebrations. “
