A dead woman and a man fighting for their lives after ‘pedestrians hit a car’ at 3am

A woman died and a man is fighting for his life after a collision in Ashton-under-Lyne shortly after 3 a.m. Saturday.

Police and paramedics were called to report that a red Volkswagen Golf had collided with two pedestrians on Manchester Road near Snipe Retail Park at 3.35am.

A 27-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene and a 28-year-old man was taken to hospital with fatal injuries.

The victims were pedestrians.

A 31-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing death while driving without proper care and attention.

He remains in police custody for questioning and police investigations continue.

Manchester Road remains closed this morning.

Police Inspector Danny Byrne, from GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “This morning’s incident has had truly tragic consequences and we have specialist officers supporting the woman’s family as our investigations continue.

“Our thoughts are also with the man and his family as he receives treatment at the hospital and we are asking any witnesses or anyone who has information or images from the dash cam to contact us as soon as possible.
