Mikel Arteta warned abandoned Arsenal stars and potential transfer targets that they shouldn’t need to be convinced to play for the club.

The Gunners boss is gearing up for his first summer transfer window in charge, having taken office after Unai Emery was fired mid-season.

Some of the biggest Spanish deals will concern players who are already on their books, with club captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang entering the final year of his contract and strongly linked to a move.

Meanwhile, star Bukayo Saka has yet to sign a contract extension after joining the first team.

Arteta could also face a challenge to attract new players, with Arsenal unlikely to play Champions League football.

However, speaking to club legend Ian Wright in an interview for Adidas, the 38-year-old offered his frank insight.

“By the time we mentioned Arsenal, Ian, you know what it means around the world,” he said.

“Everyone wants to come here and we have a very clear idea of who we are.

“You know, it doesn’t take a lot of convincing and if they do, it’s not a good starting point for me.”

“If I have to convince a player to stay or join us at Arsenal, it stops me a little.

“It has to be:” What do I have to do? I want to play for that club. “

“That’s the kind of emotion I want to hear right now. And the same with the players who are here.”
