Travel bosses condemned a shocking attack on a teenage girl that left her screaming for her mother when she was hit and robbed on a tram.
Metrolink boss Danny Vaughan criticized the assault, which was filmed and shared on social media, as “totally unacceptable.”
Vaughan promised to help the police bring those responsible to justice.
The victim was traveling from the north Manchester area in the city center, when she was surrounded by a group of teenagers.
Horrible images show a girl repeatedly hitting the victim around the head before dragging her to the floor, where she is kicked and beaten.
At one point, the teenager can be heard screaming for help and begging for her mother.
His iPhone was stolen during the incident and required hospital treatment for his injuries.
Officers from Greater Manchester Police’s anti-theft unit, Operation Valiant, launched a swift investigation after the incident on April 19 and made four arrests.
Two girls, 14 years old and one 16 years old, have been arrested on suspicion of theft. Another 15-year-old girl was arrested on suspicion of assault.
All have been rescued pending further consultations.
In a statement, Mr. Vaughan said: “This was a terrible experience for the victim, and no one should be subjected to attacks on the tram network.
“We take Metrolink’s security very seriously, and anti-social incidents like this are absolutely unacceptable.”
The victim’s older sister asked the Manchester Evening News to share the video, as she asked for increased security for those traveling on the Metrolink network.
“It’s horrible,” said the victim’s sister.
“The boys were dating [the girls] in.
“They put the video on Snapchat and laughed at it.
“I posted it on Facebook because I wanted to show parents what their children are doing.”
The victim got off when the tram stopped in the Piccadilly area and was assisted by a passerby who called the police and an ambulance.
She was rushed to the hospital, where she was treated for bruised ribs and a dislocated wrist.
The victim’s family says the attack left her deeply traumatized and continues to struggle with her mental health.
“We are just trying to keep her busy and happy as much as we can,” added her sister.
“She is better now.
“It was such a cruel attack.
“I think people need to be aware of what’s going on on the trams.”
As the investigation continues, the police ask anyone with more information to come forward.
Vaughan added: “We are working to address this type of behavior in association with the Greater Manchester Police Transport Unit through the TravelSafe Association.”
He added: “We fully support Greater Manchester Police with this investigation, and I would urge people to call 101 if they have any information or if they witness any behavior that concerns them in the future.”
Anyone who has witnessed this incident at that time should call 101 citing CRI 06A2 / 0008443/20.
