This League One final table won’t please Coventry City fans

Coventry City’s Sky Bet League One season was going to end today, but who would have been promoted and who would have made the play-offs?

Mark Robins’ team is currently the best, five points ahead of Rotherham United and seven points ahead of Oxford United as football waits to see when it can restart after being stopped by the coronavirus pandemic.

Sky Sports has turned to Football Manager 2020 to find out what might have happened during the rest of the campaign.

According to a simulation performed by Football Manager, facing the last day, three teams, Coventry, Oxford and Rotherham, are level with 78 points at the top of the table.

Oxford records four consecutive wins in April, including a 2-1 victory at Coventry. That helps put them on top of the goal difference on the last day.

Rotherham picks up wins against Doncaster Rovers and Bolton Wanderers from their past two games to put them second on goal difference before their last game against Sunderland.

Coventry picked up just one win in April, 3-1 against Burton Albion in their penultimate game to leave them third but level on points with the first two.

On a dramatic final day, Coventry lost 3-1 to AFC Wimbledon, while Oxford beat Bolton 2-1 and Rotherham drew 1-1 at home to Sunderland.

Everything leaves Oxford as champion with 81 points and Rotherham rose in second place with 79 points.

Coventry finishes third at 78 and joins Portsmouth, Peterborough United and Sunderland in the play-offs.
