Kate Middleton met her prince in college, but didn’t walk down the aisle of Westminster Abbey with her first tiara until she was 29.
When the couple finally announced their engagement in November 2010, Charles joked, “They’ve practiced enough.”
Prince William’s family seemed convinced that Kate was the chosen one and were confident that it would be a good addition to the Royal Family, so why did he postpone asking that important question?
Unlike his parents and brother, the now Duke of Cambridge waited until the couple had known each other for ten years before exchanging vows at Westminster Abbey.
They were good friends in college and lived together before their romance blossomed, so many expected William to ask the question rather sharp and there was reportedly a lot of pressure on him to do so.

But he refused, and his reasoning was due to his parents.
In her book The Making of a Royal Romance, royal expert Katie Nicholl claims that William promised he would never be pressured to marry before he was ready.
She claims that he learned from the unfortunate relationship from his parents and it was determined that he would not do the same.
She writes: “He knew that his father had been pressured into marrying Diana because he was considered the right girlfriend.
“He was reluctant to bow to similar pressure and promised not to be rushed at the altar. He made his feelings clear and told a journalist at an unsuspecting moment that he had no plans to get married soon.”
When William decided that the time was right, he planned a very romantic proposal.
In October 2020, a month before the official announcement, he took Kate to Kenya and they traveled across the country before heading to Lake Rutundu.
According to royal expert Katie Nicholl, she booked a log cabin for their stay, and the couple spent the day fishing (unsuccessfully) for rainbow trout.
She claims that when they returned home, William led Kate to the terrace, knelt down, and proposed.
How romantic!
The next morning it was time to leave and return home, but not before they both wrote sweet notes in the hotel guest book.
Her cute messages hint at romantic and historical vacations, though of course no one at the time would have known exactly how special it had been.
Kate wrote: “Thanks for such a wonderful 24 hours!
“Unfortunately we didn’t find any fish, but we had fun trying. I love the warm fires and the candlelight, so romantic. I hope to return soon.”
She signed with Catherine Middleton.
William wrote: “October 20-21, 2010. What fun to come back to!
“I brought more clothes this time! I took good care of myself. Thank you guys! I hope next time, I hope soon.”
Kate and William did not officially announce their engagement until the following month.
A statement from Clarence House at 11 am on Tuesday, November 16 said: “His Royal Highness Prince William of Wales and Miss Catherine Middleton are engaged to be married.
