Stadia 2.16 prepares 4K for Android TV, share screenshots, more

[ad_1]

Google Stadia has had a pretty busy week, between Tuesday’s Stadia Connect event and the launch of the new Stadia Pro games for May. Stadia for Android also saw an update to version 2.16 this week, which continues to prepare for Android TV, as well as start work on sharing screenshots and much more.

About APK Insight: In this “APK Insight” post, we have decompiled the latest version of an app that Google uploaded to the Play Store. When we decompile these files (called APKs, in the case of Android apps), we can see several lines of code within that clue about possible future features. Please note that Google may or may not submit these features, and our interpretation of what they are may be flawed. However, we will try to enable those who are closest to finishing, to show you what they will look like if they are sent. With that in mind, keep reading.

4K and more on Android TV

Starting on an interesting note, the Google Stadia app has added many new strings that pertain to 4K, HDR, and 5.1 surround sound switches. From the writing, we believe that these options have to do with adjusting the transmission quality on your Android device.

That said, considering that there aren’t many Android phones that have a 4K-compatible display, these tweaks are likely in preparation for the Stadia Android TV app. This theory is supported by strings that HDR is not available on their “screen” or “screen”, suggesting an external display.

As a reminder, the strings in the Stadia app generally come in pairs – the text itself and a descriptive guide to help translators when they bring Stadia into other languages.

We also found a couple of strings indicating that Google Stadia can make 4K streaming a separate lever, rather than being tied to data usage settings.

Capture share links

Just a few days ago, Google enabled the use of the capture button on the Stadia Controller while playing on Android phones. Currently, the only way to share your Stadia screenshot and video captures is to download them and share the files with friends or social media. Apparently the next step for Stadia is to make capturing a more useful social feature by adding a share button.

Tooltip is displayed on the share icon button while viewing a capture, when the capture has not yet been shared and you can share it.

Once you’ve marked a capture as shared, a new “Share Link” button will appear, allowing you to immediately copy or share the link of your Stadia capture to your friends. Presumably, all of this will work very similarly to the Google Photos link sharing options.

Needless to say, this is much easier than manually downloading videos and hoping whoever sends them can play .webm files.

Text chat

Right now in Stadia, the only way to talk to your friends is through voice, either in-game or through the party system. With Stadia 2.16, we found a significant number of new references in the code for “chat”, “chat messages”, “conversation” and “direct messages”.

For now though, Stadia’s chat features seem to be in a very early state, not something Google would launch anytime too soon.

Achievement list

When playing Stadia on the web or from Chromecast, you can open your profile to see what achievements you have unlocked for a particular game and what remains to be done. Currently, this is not possible in Stadia for Android, but work has begun to recover the function. However, some of the strings are currently blank, indicating that it is still a work in progress.

Stadia Store Upgrades

A minor complaint that came up in the past few months is that Stadia Pro discounts are only shown to Stadia Pro members. This is particularly annoying, as the discounts offered sometimes exceed the cost of renewing Stadia Pro for a month. To help players save some money and to further promote Stadia Pro, the Stadia store will soon show non-Pro members the discounts offered with Pro.

Similarly, the Stadia Store will inform non-Pro members that the game they are viewing is currently available to claim free of charge for Pro members.
