Former Everton captain Phil Neville has called his brother Gary an “idiot” for the not-so-warm welcome he received at Old Trafford.

Phil had signed for Everton in the summer of 2005, leaving the Manchester United youth club with his brother as captain of the Red Devils.

The former Blues midfielder opened on his first return to Old Trafford since his departure, which ended in a 2-0 loss to the visitors.

Phil recalled seeing his brother in the tunnel, saying he was ignored while the cameras were nearby, but it was a different story once they were turned off.

“It was one of the first games, and I went down the tunnel, and you think he’s going to say hi.” And he didn’t, “the former Toffees midfielder told the Daily mail.

He added: “Giggsy said hello, Scholesy said hello. I think Wes [Brown] I was there and I said hello.

“And then there is a camera right in front of where the captains are and I thought,” Typical Gary, he’s playing for the cameras, playing for the show. “

“The moment we walked past the camera, he seriously said,” Okay Phil, how’s it going? “

“What an absolute idiot. For the cameras, for Sky Sports and his image, he thought, “I’m not saying hi.” I thought, “No, that’s not for me.”

Neville then described how his family was divided for a time after he moved out of Old Trafford.

He added: “My twin sister was obviously at the end of Everton, so she tore apart the entire family. It was just one of the games where if United won, I probably received criticism from Everton fans for being a United fan.

“If Everton won, my family would not speak to me. It was just one of those awkward situations. I just wanted that game to be out of the way. “
