And, if necessary, it will make the ship release process take much longer.
How long will this all take?
According to experts, it could be between a few more days, if the dredging is successful, and potentially several more weeks.
However, the Japanese owners of Ever Given have set themselves the potentially optimistic target for Saturday night.
“We continue to work to remove sediment from now on, with additional dredging tools,” said Yukito Higaki, owner of Shoei Kinsei.
Mr. Aylott noted that the tide has likely risen a bit during this time period, which could help lift the boat out of the silt and sand.
But he stressed that if the dredging and tugging combination fails, then the Ever Given will not be released from its sandy and muddy prison for quite some time.
“We’ll be looking at it in a couple of weeks potentially,” he said.
