BLuxury tourists could travel abroad without quarantine this summer under a traffic light system to “green list” countries, a proposal that has been well received by industry bosses.
“The traffic light system would provide clarity, as countries would be ranked based on criteria including vaccine launch, infection rates, and hospital infrastructure. It would be designed to give visibility to those who leave about the performance of a country, “said Paul Charles, executive director of travel consultancy The PC Agency. “Consumers are willing to accept the sun, sand, sea and smear this summer if it means a safe trip abroad,” he added.
Travelers returning to the UK from ‘amber’ countries will likely face pre-departure testing and quarantine for at least five days under the proposed system, while the ban on travel from ‘red list’ countries is likely to continue.
Airlines UK, the trade body for UK-registered airlines also welcomed the plan: “We know that universal and unrestricted travel from 17 May is unlikely, but under a tiered system, based on the At risk, international travel can restart and increase significantly, with minimal time constraints, ”said CEO Tim Alderslade.
Details of the plan for the resumption of international travel are due to be revealed by the Global Travel Taskforce on April 12. However, government ministers warned consumers not to book holidays in the context of rising infection rates in Europe.
“It just feels premature to book international holidays at this point,” Helen Whately, State Minister for Social Welfare, told BBC Breakfast on Monday, echoing statements made by Defense Secretary Ben Wallace on Sunday.
