‘It was a carnage’: Sky News journalist describes what it was like to cover the heart of the COVID crisis in Italy

Chief Correspondent Stuart Ramsay was the first to film inside the epicenter of the world’s coronavirus outbreak a year ago.

Filmed in hospitals in Bergamo and Cremona, Ramsay’s reports revealed the true scope of the pandemic and were a warning of things to come for the UK.

Here, describe your experience.

What we were seeing were the worst nightmares we had ever imagined. It was like a movie. And it was happening right in front of my eyes.

We weren’t in the intensive care unit, we weren’t inside the hospital, we were in the hallways leading to the emergency rooms. It was a carnage.

I will not forget what I saw.

But more, much more, I clearly remember my first thoughts: ‘Oh my gosh, we’re going to get crushed in the UK. My family and everyone I know is going to be crushed. We have to tell everyone. We have to show everyone, now “.

We filmed for about an hour.

Every minute stays with me as we watch people in the last throes of life and staff with wide-eyed disbelief trying to save lives and trying to control their own panic.
