The Duke of Edinburgh underwent surgery for a pre-existing heart condition and will remain in hospital for several more days, Buckingham Palace announced.
Prince Philip, 99, was transferred Monday from King Edward VII private hospital to St Bartholomew Hospital, a major cardiac unit.
The palace said in a statement: “The Duke of Edinburgh underwent a successful procedure yesterday for a pre-existing heart condition at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital.
“His Royal Highness will remain in the hospital for treatment, rest and recovery for several days.”
The Duke was admitted to the King Edward VII in central London on February 16 to “rest and watch” after feeling ill.
It was not an emergency admission and he entered unaided, with aides revealing that they expected to be released in a few days and that doctors were simply acting “very cautious.”
But the palace later revealed that he was being treated for an infection and would be staying in the hospital for several days longer than expected.
The Duke, who in 2011 received treatment for a blocked coronary artery, was later transferred to San Bartolomé by ambulance, as shown below.
