Gordon Elliott says he has defrauded the racing industry, its owners and its staff with a “moment of indefensible insanity” as the sport came together to condemn the image of the trainer sitting on a galloping dead horse.

Elliott spoke exclusively to the Racing Post on a day when the British Horse Racing Authority banned him from having riders in Britain while an investigation by the Irish Horse Racing Regulatory Board is underway into the image that appeared on the social media on the weekend.

However, the BHA will allow the trainer’s horses to run if they are transferred to another trainer. Elliott’s team for Cheltenham includes undefeated superstar Envoi Allen.

Elliott’s largest owners, Gigginstown House Stud, have said they will stay with the trainer, who confirmed it was one of their horses, Morgan, in the picture. The gelding won four of his 21 starts and died of a heart aneurysm at age seven in 2019.

The coach spoke about the incident on Monday and said he will spend the rest of his life repenting and paying for the mistake he made.

Elliott said: “It is indefensible. Alive or dead, the horse had a right to dignity. A moment of madness that I will have to spend the rest of my life paying for and for which my staff are suffering.

“I’m going to be punished, I completely understand. But it absolutely breaks my heart to read and hear people say that I have no respect for my horses. That couldn’t be further from the truth. My whole life has revolved around horses. horses ever since. I was a child. I don’t know anything else. Horses are all I have. I came out of nowhere and built a dream.

“When your world starts to crumble in front of you, it’s a scary place to be. I just hope people can understand how sorry I really am and find some way to forgive me for what I’ve done.”

Elliott revealed that she had become aware of the image circulating while at Fairyhouse on Saturday.

“I got a phone call after the penultimate race at Fairyhouse on Saturday, telling me about the image that had appeared on social media,” he said. “My initial reaction was that it couldn’t have been me, but then they sent me the photo and I realized it was. It was a few years ago.

“There were a lot of people who told me to say it was retouched, but the only thing that they have always told me in life is that if you start lying, you will end up lying for the rest of your life.

“I instantly realized the magnitude of the situation and thought of everything I had worked so hard for. I bought my patio nine years ago and the day I bought it I didn’t even have the deposit to pay for it. I have worked so hard to get where i am today.

“My heart goes out to my entire staff. I know how hard they work. I know that I have not only let them down, but I have also let down the entire racing industry. That is due to my stupidity and I really am. I am so sorry. . “
