A Good Morning Britain guest has divided audiences after giving his frank views on ISIS’s girlfriend, Shamima Begum.
On Saturday, the Supreme Court issued a verdict that Ms Begum could not return to the UK to fight a citizenship battle.
Ms. Begum is now trapped in a detention camp in Syria after the decision was announced.
He had left the UK at the age of 15 with two friends to join the Islamic State terror group, which caused his British citizenship to be revoked on national security grounds.
Now human rights attorney Adam Wagner has argued that the Supreme Court’s decision was wrong, suggesting that the law has been bent to make an exception for Ms. Begum due to her public notoriety.
Wagner told Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid: “She has done terrible things and what she said is despicable, but it comes down to due process.”
“She has not been charged with any crime. She was born and raised here.
“The Supreme Court has said that he will never be able to appeal while he is in Syria. They have taken away his citizenship, so he is now stalled.”
He continued: “We have brought back hundreds of similar cases and it is not clear to me why they cannot bring her back and do what we do best and give her a fair trial.”
“You raise a good point,” interjected Piers, “you would not let any ISIS killers return.
“But she didn’t express any regrets. This woman shows no regrets, no regrets … She has had time to think about what happened.”
Piers added: “She has not changed. She is now 21 years old. She has not denounced ISIS. She has not said anything against them. She seems to be stuck in the position that she believes ISIS was not a bad thing.”
Viewers were divided on the issue.
One tweeted: “Sorry, no. It is necessary to give an example here, laws can change and must fit with modern and secular societies. What example does allowing me to return? That you can voluntarily travel somewhere to commit crimes despicable and we’ll ‘let you come back. No. “
“She made her bed, let her lie on it!” another tweeted: “I think our authorities have enough to deal with without having to deal with additional idiots.”
A third insisted: “She must never return, she has no right to appeal.”
Others disagreed, however, in writing: “Shamima has been treated very badly by the UK government. She is being made an example. The law cannot be changed just to appease the British public.”
Another wrote: “She is a British citizen, she needs to go back, be evaluated and potentially prosecuted.”
