Prince Harry tells Oprah Winfrey that ‘his greatest fear was that history would repeat itself’ in reference to Diana’s death | US News

Prince Harry has said he feared “history would repeat itself” and that the process of leaving royal life has been “incredibly difficult” for him and his wife Meghan.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex spoke with Oprah Winfrey about life inside and outside the royal family.

The interview with Winfrey, who lives near the couple’s new home in Montecito, California, will be screened in the UK on March 8, a day after it airs in the United States.

In one of the two 30-second promo clips posted by CBS on social media, Harry says, “I’m really relieved and happy to be sitting here talking to you with my wife next to me.”

When a picture of him as a child was shown with his mother, Princess Diana, he continued, “Because I can’t even begin to imagine what it must have been like for her to go through this process alone all those years ago, because it’s been incredibly difficult both of us.

“But at least we have each other.”

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were shown sitting outside side by side, Harry in a gray suit and Meghan, who is pregnant with their second child, in a black dress.

A second clip contains Harry saying, “My biggest concern was history repeating itself,” but the rest is dominated by Winfrey, with statements like, “You said some pretty shocking things here” and “almost insurmountable, it seems like there was a breakup point?” without any indication of what it refers to.

Meghan’s response is not heard in either clip.

Analysis: Diana’s comment is ‘hitting royalty and her father’

By Rhiannon Mills, Royal Correspondent

It’s the most anticipated royal interview in recent years, so it’s no wonder the producers of Oprah’s 90-minute talk with Harry and Meghan have gotten dramatic on the promo.

But aside from the ominous and moody music, they’ve also been smart with the choice of clips.

We don’t hear from Meghan, we only see her face as Oprah pesters us with questions and statements: “Were you silent or were you silenced?”, “You have said some pretty shocking things here”, all of that just left wondering what the hell did said the Sussexes?

The only person we hear from is Harry, comparing his experience to his mother’s.

We’ve heard him speak before about his fear of history repeating itself; that she didn’t want to see Meghan tormented by the tabloids and paparazzi in the same way as Princess Diana.

It is admirable that he wanted to defend his wife and speak so lovingly of his mother. But her comment also comes across as a considerable side blow to the Royal Family and her father, Prince Charles, when she talks about her mother having to deal with her problems alone.

In the past, I think Harry would have been more circumspect in his choice of words. If we were to wonder if the Sussexes were going to be subtle in their responses or hold back, I think we have our answer.

As the big buildup begins, we only have a week until we find out what those “shocking” revelations are and who will be to blame for making their lives “incredibly hard” and “almost insurmountable.”

Harry and Meghan married at Windsor Castle in 2018 and his son Archie was born a year later.

But the couple walked away from real life full-time in March 2020, unhappy at media scrutiny, intrusion, restrictions on their roles, and racist attitudes displayed by some towards the Duchess.

Last month was confirmed that they would not return to royal duties, which means that Harry will give up his honorary military titles.
