On Friday, a US panel recommended the Covid injection of one dose for emergency approval. The United States emergency use authorization, now expected shortly, of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine would follow those of the Pfizer and Moderna doses.

Joe Biden, the president of the United States, said: “We are going to use every imaginable way to expand the manufacture of the vaccine … and make progress even faster.”

Johnson & Johnson emphasized that their vaccine was shown to work with a single injection and can be stored long-term at standard refrigerator temperatures, which “offers both logistical and practical advantages.”

On Saturday, South Africa received its second shipment of Johnson & Johnson Covid vaccines. The country of nearly 59 million people, which has seen nearly 50,000 succumb to the virus, has been widely criticized for its slow procurement of vaccines and its lack of strategy.

Zweli Mkhize, the health minister, said the second installment of Johnson & Johnson vaccines had arrived at OR Tambo International Airport.

Most of the initial doses received two weeks ago have been administered to more than 63,600 healthcare workers since vaccinations began 11 days ago.
