A39 accident: man dies after collision of two cars near Bude

A man tragically died after an accident on the A39 near the Devon and Cornwall border last night, Wednesday 24 February.

Police say they were called into a two-vehicle traffic collision on the A39 between Bude and Kilkhampton, involving a black Mini Cooper and a gray VW Passatt, at approximately 5:55 p.m.

In a statement on the force’s website, a Devon and Cornwall police spokesman said: “A driver suffered minor injuries and attended North Devon District Hospital.

“A 60-year-old driver was taken to Derriford Hospital, but was sadly pronounced dead on arrival.

“Local neighborhood officers and officers from the Alliance Roads Police Team attended, along with a forensic collision investigator and a crime scene officer.

“A full investigation of the scene was conducted and officers are working to establish the cause of this collision.”

“Police would like to thank the public for their patience as they investigate the scene and are appealing for any witnesses to this collision or they may have dash cam footage at phone 101 quoting Log 714 02/24/2021”

At 6.16 am this morning, the road and traffic monitoring service Inrix reported that the road remains closed. Inrix’s alert reads: “A39 in both directions closed due to recovery work and a previous accident, two vehicles involved from Ivyleaf Golf Course (Bush, Bude) to Stibb Turn-Off (Kilkhampton, Bude).

“Police have confirmed that the road remains closed. There was a serious accident at the hairpin turn between Kilkhampton and Stratton just before 6pm last night (Wednesday).”
