Neil Lennon’s second term as Celtic manager will end imminently, and Sunday’s 1-0 loss at Ross County will likely be his last game in charge. Celtic are 18 points behind Rangers, elected champions in the Scottish Premiership.
There was a widespread expectation that Lennon would leave at the end of this season. However, the loss at Dingwall – County kicked off the final league game – has triggered action from Celtic’s board. Lennon’s assistant John Kennedy is likely to take over for the remainder of this campaign.
Lennon has been the subject of strong criticism from a section of Celtic support for months. He returned to the club in early 2019, following Brendan Rodgers’ departure for Leicester. Lennon, a decorated player for the club, also managed Celtic between 2010 and 2014.
In pursuing what would have been an unprecedented 10th consecutive title, Celtic have failed to win 11 of their 30 league games. There was an exit from the Champions League in qualifying at the hands of Ferencvaros, with County also responsible for the elimination of the League Cup.
Celtic’s recruitment has been widely criticized, as has a January training trip to Dubai that generated a great deal of negative publicity and forced the isolation of 13 players, plus Lennon, for a draw with Hibernian.
