TTransportation chiefs are rushing to remove “dangerous” icicles that could fall on pedestrians or motorists, as roads have been closed and routes have been diverted due to the threat.

In Suffolk, large icicles dangling from a bridge caused highway chiefs to close off part of a busy route. they have led to part of a very busy route being closed by highway chiefs this morning.

Icicles hang along the entire Sturmer Road Bridge and have been seen on walking routes across the country, including the Hopton Tunnel on the High Peak Trail in Derbyshire.

Network Rail has also used a special train to remove dangerous 5-foot (1.5 m) icicles hanging from the ceiling of a tunnel on the Settle to Carlisle line.

The operator said that some icicles were also hand-cleaned by staff during freezing weather conditions.

Icicles can fall and cause delays in the passage of trains.

There is a fear that as the weather gets warmer, icicles will melt and fall on unsuspecting pedestrians or cars.
