Tottenham manager José Mourinho says Gareth Bale’s post on social media on Wednesday was a contradiction to reality, after the Welsh forward missed out on the midweek loss to Everton despite saying that he had a “good session” in training.
Mourinho admitted after the 5-4 loss to Everton on Wednesday that he was surprised by the problem of Bale’s injury, saying that he did not think it was an “obvious and clear injury.”
The Spurs boss suggested that Bale himself might not have been responsible for the post, that he was “totally wrong” and said he will be in contention to appear against Manchester City on Saturday. Sky Sports Premier League, if he gets out of Friday’s training session unscathed.
“I have to admit that his position created the need to be approached. There was a contradiction between the position and reality,” Mourinho said.
“Since the beginning of the season, in relation to everything, I have tried to be very private and keep everything indoors, but I felt like I needed to address the situation.
“The position was probably not even his responsibility, but he was showing that the training session was ‘great’ and ‘I’m ready’, which was totally wrong. So when they questioned me I had to give the reality of things.
“I repeat for the last time. He was not feeling well. He asked for a scan. They did a scan. The scan did not show an injury but his feelings were still there, but as coaches, doctors, we can never go against the feelings of the player.
“So he wasn’t ready for the game. It’s as simple as that. If he’s ready for tomorrow, he will be selected for tomorrow.”
Bale has played 230 minutes in the Premier League with Spurs since coming on loan from Real Madrid in the summer, starting twice.
‘Bale’s absence will become an issue if serious injuries continue’
Sky Sports’ Paul Gilmour on the Pitch to Post Preview Podcast:
“José Mourinho spoke about his surprise that Bale was not available for that game against Everton. The last time I checked in with someone close to Bale I was happy at the club, he continued. I think we know that José Mourinho demands a lot from the players.” and no matter who you are, you could have the best CV in the world, and you look at Gareth Bale’s CV and he’s not so bad with all the Champions League titles and the goals he’s scored, but you still have to do what José Mourinho wants and still has to adapt to everything.
“It is clear that he does not feel Bale, a bit like Dele Alli, in a way, that there is a space for him in the team at the moment.

“It has been strange to see him return to this great deal. Sometimes the opinion of the coach and the club can differ. Sometimes there is a lot of pressure from the club, from business, to get the most out of someone. Who they invest a lot of money in. It just isn’t happening to them right now.
“There was a hope over the Christmas period that in the second half of the season he would really step up, but, with the nagging injuries and not being able to match the intensity that José Mourinho wants, that becomes the next topic.
“Without a doubt, we will hear a lot from José Mourinho, without a doubt they will ask him many questions about Gareth Bale, in the coming weeks if he is still not playing.
José opens up about his personal relationship with Guardiola
Mourinho and Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola come into Saturday’s game with a long and often complicated history.
They shared a dressing room together as a young coach and captain at Barcelona in the late 1990s, before facing heated rivalries on the bench, most notably with Real Madrid and Barcelona in La Liga and later with City and Manchester. United in the Premier League.
Mourinho says that despite their public squabbles in the heat of title races and big competitions, the two have long-standing mutual respect in private.
“The problem with us coaches is that it is not easy to cultivate or develop friendships because we do not see each other. We see each other before and after the games, it is difficult,” explained Mourinho.
“With Pep I follow the three years we worked together, we saw each other every day, we celebrated together the titles we won, together we were disappointed when we lost.
“A great period of our lives, he as a player and I as a young assistant. After that I can only have good feelings with him. I am from the generation where what happens in a football stays in a football match.
“There are moments in life when we don’t forget things. One of the things I don’t forget is that when my father died, he knew how important he was to me, so he made a call.
“Of course, when his mother died, I answered him in the same way. These are the things that people don’t see. Today I share them because I have the opportunity.”
Kane hoped to be fit, Lo Celso was not around
Harry Kane is expected to be fit for Saturday’s game against the Premier League leaders after spending 60 minutes of action against Everton without a setback.
Giovani Lo Celso, however, is not yet close to returning.
“Yes, I believe [Kane can play]. He played 60 minutes and without negative feelings. Maybe just a bit of stiffness, “Mourinho said.
“(Gioviani) Lo Celso is not even close.”
