Shearer’s defensive warning to United
Alan Shearer has insisted that Manchester United will not be a successful team until they resolve their defense.
United have conceded 30 goals in the Premier League this season. Manchester City have sent less than half that amount, and only Leeds, Southampton, Crystal Palace, Wolves, Newcastle, Fulham, West Brom and Sheffield United have let more in.
Everton scored three times at Old Trafford over the weekend and BBC pundit Shearer believes United must improve defensively if they are to win trophies.
“They will also have concerns, that is a weakness of theirs and they have no chance of being a successful team unless this improves and improves enormously.
“They have conceded 30 goals this season in the Premier League, no one has conceded more than them in the top nine. Fulham have 31 goals against and are in the bottom three.
“There is too much room. As a forward, you would expect to play Manchester United because you know you are going to have opportunities because they are everywhere.
“People aim, they don’t follow the runners, people don’t pick up in the area and people don’t close the crosses and the balls go into the area without pressing the ball to try to stop it and they don’t work enough to stop that cross, to close that downed player. “
